reFASHIONED was created in 2012 as an offshoot project of dtownMARKET to create an opportunity for local designers to exhibit their talents in a growing and trendy, yet gritty, area of Durham, NC.
dtownMARKET’s goal is to curate an eclectic showcase of style and design in celebration of Carolina style. dtownMARKET is excited to expand efforts to increase brand exposure for local emerging fashion talent, artists, and businesses.
The name reFASHIONED brings along a lot of meaning along with it; like eco-friendly and re-made clothing, however for us it means so much more than that. It means changing the public’s concept of fashion and design. Not only do we seek to refashion fabrics and materials but also the very way the Triangle community thinks about fashion and where it comes from.
Kala Wolfe – founder and creative director of dtownMARKET on the concept of reFASHIONED:
I believe that the art and design that you surround yourself with, including your personal style, say a lot about you. It gives you confidence, and fosters a sense of self. However, I also have strong feelings about the environmental impacts of consumerism, and so fashion and design pieces that are made from discarded or second-hand items or from carefully sourced materials are a fantastic alternative to mainstream/industrial fashion.
It’s a sort of slow-fashion concept that mirrors the slow-food movement, and I think it can thrive in this area with the right attention brought to our local designers.
